New Hampshire Avalanche Falls

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

New Hampshire Franconia Notch of the scenic White Mountain wilderness region provides plenty of inspiration and photography subjects. Fall foliage is a pristine time to capture its entire glory. There are multiple cascades, gorges, covered bridges and waterfalls along the way; this image here shows Avalanche Falls where the Flume Brook tumbles down 40 plus feet and becomes this beautiful and elegant waterfall. This New Hampshire waterfall cascades into the Flume Gorge, a natural gorge at the base of Mt. Liberty in Franconia Notch State Park. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of up to 90 feet and are up to 20 feet apart.

Liberty Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

Liberty Gorge can be best experience from top of the picturesque covered Sentinel Pine Bridge. During my latest outing in the White Mountains wilderness I explored this location and photographed at stunning New England autumn peak colors. There are probably amazing close up views from the bottom of the gorge but the state park asked people to stay on the marked trails - naturally I always follow that rule to not disturb and wildlife or trample precious vegetation.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month - Zakim Bridge / Bunker Hill Bridge Lit Up Red

http://www.decodingdyslexiama.org/

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and on 15 October 2015 I was contacted through twitter by a group that brings awareness to Dyslexia in children. That night the Zakim Bridge was supposed to light up red in support of the cause and Decoding Dyslexia MA asked if I could take some pictures of the Bunker Hill Bridge in Charlestown, MA. I was planning of photographing in the area and of course said immediately yes. Traffic as usually was horrendous in Boston and when I finally arrived on location I only found the bridge lit up blue - how disappointing. I decided to take some long exposure photography images and while waiting I tweeted the group asking them to contact Mass Transportation authorities and ask them to turn on the red. They did and sure enough 20 minutes later the lights on this Boston landmark finally turned the right color. Twilight at this point has already passed and I only got a bunch of  photographs with a pitch black sky. Nonetheless it was a great experience and the group brought Dyslexia back on my radar - good job everybody!

Behind the Photo of the Long Exposure Photography Picture at New Hampshire at Table Rock

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

On my last trip to the New Hampshire White Mountains I explored Franconia Notch State Park. Flume Brook was nicely filled with water due to a few rain events the days before my arrival. Peak autumn colors during New England fall foliage were imminent made for a spectacular photo tour to the Whites. This image here shows Table Rock, a small section of Conway granite that has been exposed and outcropped for hundreds of years. This scenic cascading water section is about 500 feet long and 75 feet wide and has plenty of photo opportunities.

Positioned in the mid section of Table Rock I found an outcrop that beautifully displayed the cascading waters of Flume Brook. I incorporated the glorious fall foliage in the back to provide the essence of this magical place. A Polarizing Filter extended exposure times while also eliminating unwanted glare on leaves and wet surfaces. Aperture in this nature photography image was set to f/22 providing a 1 second shutter speed at ISO100. I under exposed slightly to further boosting the autumn colors. During post processing I cleaned up the image from dust spots and unwanted imperfections, minimally adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final long exposure photography picture of Scenic New Hampshire at Table Rock.

Behind the Nature Photography Image of The Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/flume-gorge-juergen-roth.html

The Flume in Franconia Notch State Park is a natural gorge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The beautiful cascading Flume Brok, a mountain stream, flows through this narrow canyon. The Flume Gorge is at the base of Mt. Liberty and about 800 feet long. The covered Conway granite walls rise up to 90 feet and are covered in moss, flowers and ferns. Positioned at the bottom of the gorge I equipped my camera with a wide angle lens to capture this magical place in its complete glory. A polarizing filter eliminated unwanted glare on the flora and granite walls. Combined with the low light a Long Exposure Photography image was easily achievable, thereby creating silky waters streams of the tumbling Flume Brook waters.

During digital post processing I cleaned up the image from dust spots, adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final New Hampshire photo image of Flume Gorge.

Behind the Photography Image of Silver Cascade in Crawford Notch State Park

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/silver-cascade-at-crawford-notch-state-park-juergen-roth.html

When I photographed Silver Cascade in Crawford Notch State Park, New Hampshire last year I was disappointed by the low flow of waters while the surrounding fall foliage was spectacular. So I promised myself to return to this scenic location in the following years to come. With a bunch of rainfalls days before my arrival and the weather forecast predicting on and off showers on the day of my arrival I figured I was in for a treat. Oh boy, was I right. Again the autumn colors were glorious. The waterfall was carrying plenty of water and after working the location and exploring new perspectives I settled a bit downstream of the pool below the falls. The rocks were covered with autumn leaves making for strong foreground features that lead the viewer into the frame. A small aperture provided the desired Depth of Field and long exposure time of 2 seconds at ISO 100. A polarizing filter eliminated glare on rocks and leaves while boosting color saturation.

During my routine post processing work flow I eliminated dust spots, minimally adjusted contrast, lighting and color saturation before sharpening the final image of Silver cascade at Crawford Notch State Park.

Sentinel Pine Bridge - The Most Scenic of all New England Covered Bridges

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/sentinel-pine-bridge-juergen-roth.html

There are may picturesque covered bridges in New England but the Sentinel Pine Bridge across the Pemigewasset River most be the most scenic one of them all. The setting is incredible and the New Hampshire scenery comes truly alive in autumn when the fall foliage shows all its colors. The Pemigewasset River tumbles down into The Pool through a series of cascades and small waterfalls. The Pool is a deep basin that was formed at the end of the ice age. It is 40 feet deep and 130 feet in diameter. This is a must see New Hampshire travel destination for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers alike!

Red Leaves along the Flume Brook in Franconia Notch State Park

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

Above the spectacular Flume Gorge and Avalanche Falls in the Franconia Notch State Park of the White Mountains in New Hampshire there is a small wood bridge that crosses the Flume Brook. Upstream that bridge the waters cascades over multiple rocks and during my visit most of them were covered with fall foliage. In this intimate close up of an autumn scenery I equipped my camera with a Canon 24-70 mm lens and zoomed in on the red autumn leaves. I composed the image so that the Flume Brook provides the background of the photograph. A polarizing filter extended the exposure time a little bit, but more importantly eliminated unwanted glare on the leaves and rock formation while saturating colors of this Leaf Macro

Cascading Flume Brook at Franconia Notch State Park

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

New England autumn is in full swing. Colors are glorious throughout the region and on my recent photo tour to the White Mountains of New Hampshire I stopped at the Flume Gorge. This scenic area in the Franconia Notch State Park has many nature attractions and the Table Rock area is one of them. The rushing waters of the Flume Brook have exposed the Conway granite rock 500 feet long by 75 feet wide. The cascades along the way make for exceptional photography subjects. Bring your tripod and aim for long exposure times to capture the flowing waters as a silky white stream conveying the flow of the brook water. In this image I incorporated a large rock covered in autumn leaves as a prominent foreground object while composing by the rule of thirds.

Abstraction of the Stairway at the Boston Apple Store

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/boston-apple-store-juergen-roth.html

A while back I used a family trip to the Apple Retail Store on Boylston Street in Boston to capture an abstraction of the glass staircase in side. I envisioned a picture of the staircase for quite some time but never got around to stop by or make the effort to drive over in order to take a photo. This time I had my camera handy and I composed an abstract architecture image from the different elements of the stairway. I composed around the many different lines and shapes. During my routine post processing workflow I lightened up the image a little bit, adjusted contrast and color saturation to how I remember the real thing before sharpening the final image of Apple Store

Wildlife Photography of a Deer in Acadia National Park

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/acadia+national+park

There is no shortage of deer on Mount Desert Island, Maine and in Acadia National Park. During my last visit down east I was on my way to a Seascape Photography location when a couple of deer were next to the park loop road chewing on some delicious grass. I pulled over and equipped my Canon camera with a 70-200mm before carefully approaching the deer. While getting in closer I kept shooting. This wildlife photography image shown here is my favorite as the deer looked straight into my camera. After I captured a few pictures I turned around and left the deer in peace.

During post processing I cleaned up the image from unwanted dust spots, adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final photograph of Deer.

Scenic Monument Cove in Acadia National Park

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/sea-stack-at-monument-cove-maine-acadia-national-park-juergen-roth.html

Never has land met sea in a more dramatic fashion than at Maine Acadia National Park and every time I visit this iconic National Park in the northeast of the United States of America, I am drawn to Monument Cove. Monument Cove is easily accessible from Ocean Drive along Park Loop Road. There is a steep climb down for closer looks and the pebbles make for great compositions and foreground features. The beautiful cove and spot is named for its vertical sea stack of granite rock isolated from the cliff by coastal erosion. It is one of the most iconic scenes in Acadia National Park. Otter Cliff, another popular spot in Acadia, can be seen in the distance.

Footsteps in the Sand - Story Behind this Popular Photography Image

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/cape+cod

Cape Cod is one of the most popular summer destination in New England. We visit multiple times depending on accommodation availability and weather forecast. One of my favorite summer activity on Cape Cod is to get up before sunrise and make my way over to one of the many beautiful Cape Cod beaches. Nauset Beach is one of the best and stretches for miles along the National Seashore. This morning I was rewarded with a majestic sunrise across Atlantic Ocean. The early morning sunlight painted the sky in stunning orange hues while the sun beam beautifully reflected in the ocean waters and the beach. I encountered footsteps on the beach that I incorporated into my composition to lead the viewer into the frame towards the ocean and sunrise.

Aperture setting was f/16 providing a fast shutter speed of 1/15 of a second at ISO100 to freeze the waters. During post processing I followed my routine workflow of cleaning up the image from unwanted dust spots, adjusting light, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final image of "Towards the Sun".

Photography 101 - Understanding Depth of Field

Deep depth of field

Experiment with Depth of Field (DOF) - Make sure your focus point is spot on. Note that DOF falls approximately 1/3 in front and 2/3 past the focus point. The aperture setting provides the  photographer with a creative tool that we can use to maximize or minimize DOF, thereby impacting sharpness and composition of our photography images.

Shallow depth of field
