Boston Night Photography - How, Where and When: North End Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park

Boston Photography Galleries

Friday night I traveled to Boston and explored the skyline opportunities from the Commercial Wharf in the North End. There are limited views directly from the wharf but the view in front of Joe's American Bar and Grill is great.

Equipped with my Canon wide-angle lens I was able to incorporate the waterfront and parts of the Boston Marriott Long Wharf hotel as well as the colorful gazebo at Christopher Columbus Park into the composition. The background is dominated by the historic Custom House and beautiful Market Place Center building. Upon arrival I set up and patiently waited for the magic of twilight to appear. It still amazes me when the short moment of perfect balance between city lights and night light occurs and transforms the urban scenery into a magical scenery.

Aperture was set to f/11 providing a shutter speed of 13 seconds at ISO400. During post processing I followed my routine  work flow where I removed unwanted dust spots, adjusted lighting, color saturation and contrast before sharpening the final image of Boston North End Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park.

Sunrise at Beavertail State Park Rhode Island

Sunrise at Beavertail State Park Rhode Island

Experiencing a beautiful sunrise to me is always a worth-while and magical outdoor adventure. I love the quietude that comes with it and it even gets better when I am able to convey the moment in a photograph. No difference at today's sunrise at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Arriving on time was key as I was not familiar with the location and needed to carefully explore this Rhode Island nature jewel. After slip sliding in the dark across the obstacle course of rocks and stepping into a few tide pools that awarded me wet feet and shoes, I eventually arrived at this final seascape photography composition. It was right in time for daybreak. Glad I didn't miss the moment although it was a close call.

During post processing I brought back shadows and adjusted highlights. I then adjusted brightness and contrast, lighting and color saturation before removing dust spots and imperfections and sharpening the final Ocean State photography image.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding filters and camera setting - happy to answer those.

Sunrise Photography at the Claiborne Pell Bridge in Newport, Rhode Island

 Newport Bridge

After photographing Hazard Rock in Narragansett last week I returned back for some more sunrise photography. I envisioned a picture of the Claiborne Pell Bridge aka as the Newport Bridge. The suspension bridge spans Narragansett Bay connecting the city of Newport on Aquidneck Island and the town of Jamestown on Conanicut Island. It turned out to be a stunning sunrise that made for pristine photography condition. On my way there I got a bit lost and did not find the location I had my eyes on at first. Since sunrise was quickly approaching I decided to pull over on Bay View Drive and enjoy the magic. There were basically no other cars around which it was ok to park that way on the sidewalk.

I quickly set up tripod and camera. Equipped with a Canon Mark IV and a Canon 28-70mm I went to work. In this image composition I opted to incorporate a bolder in the foreground which serves as an anchor for the viewer. The strong contrast between the dark rock and the bright morning sky also added more interest to the photograph. I used a spit ND filter to balance the light in the front of my camera and the magical sky.

During post processing I brought back shadows and adjusted highlights. I then dialed up contrast, lighting and color saturation before removing dust spots and imperfections before sharpening the final image of The Claiborne Pell Bridge.
