How to find suitable Insect Macro Photography Subjects

Finding Macro Photography subjects is one of the most challenging parts when photographing insects. I recommend picking a local butterfly garden in a nearby wildlife sanctuary or your own garden and choose a certain area like a bush, leaves, or flowers. Watch carefully and see what nature provides. Sometimes moving your hands through the target area makes them move and easier to spot. Train your eyes to discover the masters of camouflage and enjoy the hide and seek game most insects will play with you.

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/quebec+city/all

Quebec City is a great place to visit and photograph. The quintessentially French Canadian city and region provides the photographer with plenty of inspiration and photography opportunities along the way. The old town with its undeniable French charm, upper town featuring the most famous landmark in Quebec City, the luxury hotel Chateau Frontenac, Vieux port in the lower town is packed with historic old buildings, some with beautiful Fresco wall art. The history of this city and region follows you at every step of the way - Quebec City is a must visit when one is in the area.

Lavender Iris Flower Fine Art Photography

I always love to isolate flowers against a dark backgrounds as they really make the floral colors pop and give the image a touch of elegance.

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/lavender-iris-juergen-roth.html

Usually I choose a large enough black cardboard that I place behind the floral photographic object using the backrest of a chair for support. As a base I use the chair itself that I place in front of a window. The set up of my Macro Photography studio next to our dining room window provides exceptional and beautiful lighting conditions in the morning. White cardboards are used to enhance the light and direct the light towards the floral when it is facing away from the window. I always use a few hardcover books to stabilize and adjust the height of the flower for the optimal set up and best back-lighting impact. I often adjust the white boards to explore the impact on the lighting and better control the light on the flower blossom. Adjusting the light with a white board or using a reflector is a great learning experience for us photographers and often leads to more inspiring and beautiful fine art photography artwork. At longer exposure times a tripod is a must. I captured this purple iris in landscape and portrait format and for me both images work very well. Landscape versus Portrait format is one of the first decisions we make when taking pictures and here it worked in both images. That is not always the case and then we have to decide on the best format to support the most compelling and strongest composition. Light from behind always provides a beautiful illumination of the iris that keeps the viewer captivated. In both photographs the aperture was set to f/20 providing maximum Depth of Field and resulting in an exposure time of 1.3 seconds. An ISO setting of 100 minimized noise and provided best possible photography image quality. During post processing steps I removed dust, minimally adjusted brightness, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final images of this Lavender Iris - interested to see more floral fine art of flower like orchids, sunflowers, tulips, lilies, anemones or daisies? Seascape Photography Tip

Extending exposure times to multiple seconds or even minutes is a creative tool to generate beautiful Silky Water Effects. Try using your polarizing filter, a big stopper or variable neutral density filter to bring your seascape photography to life.

Compositional Landscape Photography Tip

Before capturing a landscape photography picture always think about the placement of the horizon. An old rule but efficient one is the Rule of Thirds. Don't use it as a set rule; more as a guideline or starting point for a more interesting and pleasing photographic composition. In Landscape Photography it is best to place the horizon in accordance to the importance of the sky; with dramatic sky formations placing the horizon in the lower third will give the sky more preference, for images with stronger foregrounds and weaker cloud or sky formations a horizon in the upper third of the image is more preferred.

Macro Photography Tips and Tricks

Keep an eye on the background and eliminate glare on leaves or distracting branches. Isolating the insect against a clean background is crucial for a successful photography image. Utilize colorful scrubs and flowers to your compositional advantage as an attractive backdrop of color when appropriately blurred out via aperture or focal lens setting. Including an attractive background features like a second flower may add a story to the image.
