Behind the Photo Image: Avalanche Falls in the Flume

The New Hampshire Franconia Notch State Park located in the picturesque White Mountain National Forest wilderness supplies tons of interesting photography subjects and inspiration. Autumn with it s colorful fall foliage is a great time to capture its entire glory. There are multiple cascades, gorges, covered bridges and waterfalls along the short walk through the wood. It's a true treasure for the outdoor photographer and nature enthusiast. The featured image shows the elegant Avalanche Falls where the Flume Brook tumbles down 40 plus feet and becomes this beautiful waterfall. This New Hampshire waterfall cascades into the Flume Gorge, a natural gorge at the base of Mt. Liberty in Franconia Notch State Park. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of up to 90 feet and are up to 20 feet apart - very impressive to see and to photograph.

Photo Tip: Don't pack up your gear after autumn peak colors have passed!

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/leaf

When autumn colors have passed and leaf drop is complete, it's that time of the year that makes for great use of your macro lens. Grounds are covered in beautiful Autumn Hues, rain and dew drops or the first snow add beautiful detail and interest to your macro photography images. So don't hang up your gear quite yet for the year; instead embrace the colder but rewarding month of November and early December to explore these hidden macro gems on the ground.

Photo Tip: How to Create Ethereal Waterscapes

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

Ethereal waterscapes are created by a combination of small aperture for Depth of Field, low ISO for noise reduction and high quality and a Polarizing Filter.

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

A shutter speed at around 1/2 through 1/15 of a second creates velvety and silky effects for waterfalls, streams, rivers and cascading water.

New England Waterfalls - Profile Falls

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

Autumn is a pristine time for outdoor photography. This year was no different and on my last photography tour to White Mountains New Hampshire I mad a pit stop at gorgeous Profile Falls. This scenic New England waterfall is located off NH Route 3A near Bristol region. Surrounded by fall foliage peak colors I climbed to the bottom of the waterfall to capture the massive stream of water across Profile Falls. A polarizing filter eliminated glare on rocks and leaves while also providing a long shutter speed that allowed the ethereal flow of water. Aperture was set to f/22 for Depth of Field and a long exposure time of 3 seconds at ISO 100.

During routine post processing I cleaned up the picture off imperfections and dust spots, minimally adjusted contrast, lighting and color saturation before sharpening the final image of Tumbling New Hampshire Profile Waterfall.

Photo Tip of the Week: Use a Long Lens to Isolate Colors

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/lupine/all

Patterns, shapes or texture are effectively isolate by using telephoto lenses in the range of 200 to 400mm. 100mm macro photography lenses work great too. This Lupine picture was captured at 300mm. Focus on the interesting elements of the photography subject to really lead the viewer to the more interesting part of the photograph. Explore the impact of the camera aperture settings to further eliminate distracting background noise. Large aperture as f/5.6 and lower provide a shallow depth of field while small aperatures provide more detail from foreground to background.

Behind the Photography Image of Cascading Flume Brook in the New Hampshire White Mountains

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

New England autumn colors are famous throughout the world and attract people from around the globe that want to experience them. I regularly head out during this glorious season to capture this natural spectacle of colors with my camera. The Flume Gorge in White Mountains of New Hampshire is one of the many scenic area in the Franconia Notch State Park and it has many nature attractions; Table Rock is one of the first to explore on your stop. At this photo hot spot the rushing waters of the Flume Brook have exposed the Conway granite rock 500 feet long by 75 feet wide. The cascades along the way make for exceptional photography. Make sure to bring your tripod and aim for long exposure times to capture the flowing waters as a silky white stream conveying the flow of the brook water. In this nature photography image I decided to go for a more intimate composition, incorporating the small rocks with the cascading waters of Flume Brook while the red leaves convey the time of the year and season. A Polarizing Filter provided the color boost throughout the image by eliminating glare on the wet rocks and leaves. The filter also extended the shutter speed allowing for a long exposure photography image.

A small aperture of f/22 provided the desired Depth of Field and long exposure time of 2.5 seconds at ISO 100.

During routine post processing I cleaned up the picture off imperfections and dust spots, minimally adjusted contrast, lighting and color saturation before sharpening the final image of Flume Brook.

Behind the Photography Images of the Boston Zakim Bridge

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/i-got-my-blue-dress-on-tonight-juergen-roth.html

One Boston landmark that I frequently visit to photograph is the Zakim Bridge in Charlestown. This iconic bridge was erected during the big dig and has since been photographed millions of times. These three images explored a couple of new perspectives that I haven't captured in previous attempts.

I finally was able to photograph the Bunker Hill Bridge up close and as beautiful reflection with the black night sky providing the backdrop. The third photo was taken at twilight and shows the structure in it entire beauty.

Behind the Waterfall Photography Image of Profile Falls

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/new+hampshire

On my recent photography tour to New Hampshire and the White Mountains I stopped at Profile Falls. This scenic New England waterfall is located off NH Route 3A near Bristol and the White Mountains region. Surrounded by fall foliage peak colors I climbed atop the waterfall to capture Profile Falls from atop with its upstream cascades. The morning sun beautifully painted the autumn hues in spectacular colors. The overcome the high contrast between the shaded waterfall with rocks and the sun-filled leaves I used a split neutral density filter. A polarizing filter eliminated glare on rocks and leaves while also extending the shutter speed allowing to capture the tumbling water as silky white streams. A small aperture of f/22 provided the desired Depth of Field and long exposure time of 1.5 seconds at ISO 100.

During routine post processing I cleaned up the picture off imperfections and dust spots, minimally adjusted contrast, lighting and color saturation before sharpening the final image of Profile Falls.

Behind the Fall Foliage Photography Image of Rainbow at Chapman Falls in Connecticut

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/all+photography

My quest for New England fall foliage photography led me to Chapman Falls in Connecticut last week. Chapman Falls is a beautiful 60 foot waterfall located in Devil's Hopyard State Park. There are a number of potholes, waterfalls and cascades that make this an inspiring destination for long exposure photography. The waterfall is surrounded by captivating autumn colors making it a favorite destination for leaf peepers and photographers alike.

When I was about to leave the middle section of the waterfall I noticed a rainbow appearing at the base of the upper fall. I immediately was drawn to the subject and started exploring the opportunities. Positioning my Tripod and Canon Gear  was the trickiest part as the rainbow only appeared in a certain angle. Ones I figured out the best spot I turned the polarizing filter into position for highest impact, as my goal was to have strong colors within the rainbow. In addition the polarizing filter lengthened exposure times which created the smooth water stream of white.

During post processing I removed photography image imperfections and unwanted dust spots, adjusted lighting, contrast and colors saturation before sharpening the final image of Rainbow at Chapman Fall.
