Behind The Image: Spring Tree Blossoms

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/1-spring-blossoms-juergen-roth.html

Earlier this spring I photographed spring blossoms off of Storrow Drive in Brighton, Massachusetts. While running errands I noticed the tree blossoms in full bloom and was inspired to go back later that day. It was somewhat of a cloudy to sunny day that would make for great floral photography. Upon arrival I started exploring the scenery but wasn’t able to compose a intriguing photograph of the overall scenery, there was either Storrow Drive in the picture or the path underneath the blooming trees distracted from the composition. I therefore decided to focus on more intimate Close Up Photography and started looking around for suitable subjects. There were plenty of them and I didn’t need to look long. In the first picture I isolate a spring blossom against other blooms in the background. To do so, I choose a large aperture setting and combined with a long telephoto lens focal length  provided me with the desired shallow Depth of Field that stirs most of the attention on the blossom of the branch. Aperture in this first photograph was f/5.6 providing an exposure time of 1/25 of a second at ISO400.

In the second photography image I isolated a blooming tree branch lit by sunlight against a dark background in the shadows. This ensured a short exposure time and even darkened the backdrop further thereby beautifully isolating the pink floral and make the colors truly pop. An aperture of f/5.6 provided a shutter speed of 1/15 of second at ISO400.

During routine post processing I removed dust spots, minimally adjusted contrast, lighting and color saturation before sharpening the final photography image of “Spring Blossom” and “Pink Blossom with Raindrops”.

Finalist at the USA Landscape Photographer of the Year 2014 Contest

http://www.juergenrothphotography.com/-/juergenrothphotography/buy.asp?photoID=14501644

One recent Monday when I was dropping off a couple of framed limited signed edition photography prints for the "All Cape Cod" fine art exhibition at the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable, I received an email from Charlie Waite that I made it as a finalist in the USA Landscape Photographer of the Year 2014 Contest. I was psyched and after getting home I checked which image made it through the second round of judging. Turns out there were 7 images in the semi finals and 4 made it through to the finals. I am still on cloud nine since one is not judged everyday by a Panel of Judges that are world-famous photographers - I am very honored that I made into the finals despite the incredible competition and difficult judging process.

Boston Sunrise Photography

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/boston-awakening-juergen-roth.html

Monday morning I stepped out of bed in the wee hours and made my way over to one of my favorite Boston Skyline Photography locations; the Boston University bridge which spans over the Mass Pike, a railroad track and the Charles River. I like this location as it provides the photographer with a pristine view of the Charles River banks and the Boston skyline landmarks such as the John Hancock Tower or the Prudential Center.

It turned out to be time well spend. The sunrise was gorgeous providing me with ample lighting and sky colors. Finding a pleasing composition was not an easy task but I settled on a picture that included aforementioned architecture and the famous Citgo Sign on Kendall Square near Boston Fenway Park. Camera equipped with a 24-70mm lens and steady on a tripod I was taking my photographs when suddenly the lights of the Citgo Sign turned on again. Well into sunrise it caught me by surprise but as I was all set up I continued shooting the skyline, delighting to have been at the right place at the right time.

Camera aperture was f/22 providing an exposure time of 6 seconds at ISO100. I purposely underexposed 2/3 of a stop to get a more saturated punch on the orange morning sky. The long exposure time at that time of the day was achieved with a Neutral Density Filter. In addition, a Split Neutral Density Filter helped to overcome the strong contrast between the darker foreground and the bright sunrise sky. During digital post processing I removed dust spots, minimally adjusted contrast, lighting and color saturation before sharpening the final Boston skyline photography image Boston Awakening.

Photography Exposure Know How

Exposure is one of the most important camera and lens functions that photographers need to master when pursuing photography. A correct exposed photograph conveys an image of clarity that retains details and colors in all areas of interest including light or dark areas.

Correct Photo Exposure is subjective and while I prefer a slightly underexposed image that boosts colors and saturation, others may not. Correct exposure is a fine combination of:

1. ISO setting
2. Shutter speed
3. Aperture choice
4. Lens settings

Understanding how these 4 elements work together and their individual impact on a photograph is key to Exceptional Photography

Behind the Photography Image - Flower Abstraction

I always love to create Abstract Flower Photography images by using their beautiful forms and vivid colors to my advantage. In this picture I dismissed my usual Approach to Flower Photography as I already had my final image in mind. After setting up tripod and camera equipment I carefully explored the potential of the flower bouquet from all angles in front of me. It did not take long until I finally arrived at a composition that satisfied my original photographic goal. There was only little need to further adjust the iris floral in the background to better compliment the flower blossom in the front of the image thereby providing the viewer with a second colorful focal point.

Manual focusing allowed to pin point the focus on the yellow beard. I then picked a large aperture of f/5.6 to allow for shallow Depth of Field to let everything else in the back fall out of focus and into a colorful blur. Shutter speed resulted into 1.6 seconds at ISO100. During post processing I removed minor dust spots and minimally adjusted lighting, color saturation and contrast before sharpening the final abstract flower photography image "Flower Abstraction".

Creative Photo Tip: Capturing the day to day in an unusual different way

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/intentional+camera+movement/all

A technique to photograph the day to day in an unusual different way is called intentional camera movement. Intentional camera movement or ICM is a photographic effect where the camera is rotated or moved in a horizontal, diagonal or vertical direction while photographing a static object. The camera can be hand-held or mounted on a tripod when performing the actual camera movement. I usually prefer using my tripod for best Photography Results

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/art/all/intentional+camera+movement/all

The right combination of shutter speed, aperture setting and ISO setting will produce the desired blur and an artistic abstraction of the scenery. A long enough shutter speed is the key ingredient and allows the camera to paint the photographic object in its abstract form. There will be trial and errors in the beginning and it may take a while to develop your own technique but it certainly provides you with a unique set of photographs and lots of fun. Next time you out and about give it a shot but be aware you might get hooked!

Photography Business Tip #6: Write Informative Image Descriptions to tell the Stories Behind your Pictures

In an earlier Business Tip I encouraged you to start writing a regular blog. I explained that telling the story behind your pictures sells photography. The same can be said when writing descriptions of your images on your Website or when posting to your Social Networks

www.RothGalleries.com

The initial attraction to your image may well transform into an emotional response leading a customer to an art buying decision.

Macro Photography Tip - Pick the right aperture setting to achieve sufficient Depth of Field

www.rothgalleries.com

What is the appropriate aperture setting?

Small apertures are set by choosing large f/stop numbers like f/11 and larger. Those camera settings provide maximum depth of field.

Large apertures on the other hand (small f-stop number like f/5.6 and smaller) minimize depth of field.

www.exploringthelight.com

The photographic objective is to create a sharp Macro Photography image while the background is silent and in blur. An out of focus background solely draws the attention to the main subject and is much desired for insect macro photographs.

If needed, adjust your ISO setting accordingly to compensate for slower shutter speeds when shooting with smaller aperture. A higher ISO setting will provide you with a faster shutter speed while the smaller aperture is just what you are looking for to optimize the image for depth of field and sharpness.

p the horizon
My definition of an intimate landscape image is one that lacks the horizon. I usually look more down than up when I search for motifs. By skipping the horizon you get some abstraction in to the image as it is harder to understand the size of the subject without it. I usually don’t include any sky at all in my intimate landscape images. - See more at: http://www.ianplant.com/blog/2013/08/21/5-tips-for-better-intimate-landscapes/#sthash.rgoGEXWg.dpuf
