Butterfly Photography at the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory

The other week I visited Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. I met up with a bunch of like-minded friends and photo enthusiasts. We were able to gain early access to Magic Wings and bring in tripods with plenty of other gear. Butterflies were quietly resting and slowly starting their day. It was awesome having the place for a couple of hours to ourselves. I always like to use my tripod, even in bright daylight but it came in quite handy in this butterfly garden as it allowed for easier manual focusing. I started out with a 100mm macro lens but quickly switched to my 100-400mm lens. I actually prefer Photographing Butterflies with a long lens as it blows out the background nicer and also provides a more manageable working distance to the butterflies. Where is your favorite butterfly garden?
