Exploring New England at the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/massachusetts-vietnam-veterans-memorial-juergen-roth.html

Worcester, MA is only a short 45 minute drive west along the Massachusetts turnpike and I frequently visit the Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary to pursue macro photography. Worcester is a great town and has many interesting areas to explore. One area is Green Hill Park that can be easily reached via the Skyline Drive. At the end of the road there is a small petting zoo, a pond next to the Green Hill golf course and the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a powerful monument providing a place of dignity and quietude in a natural location for reflection, teaching and learning. The memorial is designed in three sections; place of flags, place of words and place of names.

The Memorial Image here shows the place of words with text engraved into granite stones from letters written home to families by some of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who died in Vietnam. In the back of the picture is the place of flags which is a beautifully landscaped, circular monument with 3 flags: an American Flag, the State Flag of Massachusetts and a POW/MIA Flag.

Hope you find the time to stop by when you are in the area and pay your tribute to these heroes.

The Ray and Maria Stata Center at MIT in Cambridge

http://juergen-roth.artistwebsites.com/featured/the-ray-and-maria-stata-center-juergen-roth.html

The other night I took my wife on a stroll around the Charles River. We parked the car on memorial Drive in Cambridge near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, crossed over the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge, passed by the Esplanade and back over to Cambridge via the Longfellow Bridge. It was a blast and we are so lucky to live a stone's throw away from Boston and its beautiful sites and areas. The twilight behind the Boston skyline was already fading by the time we got back to the car but I envisioned there would be some beautiful light left if we immediately make it over to the Ray and Maria Stata Center at MIT. I have always been intrigued by this funny looking, almost obscure architectural marvel with its unusual design in all colors. I wasted no time and went straight to work on my architecture photography assignment for the night. It took a few attempts and changing of locations to find a pleasing composition of the entire building. Including the sculpture Aesop’s Fables II of Mark di Suvero into the picture was an additional challenge, but a priority as I decided it would make for an interesting foreground feature with an additional splash of color.

I captured this image at an aperture of f/8, providing an exposure time of 20 seconds at ISO200. During post processing I removed dust spots, minimally adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final architecture Boston photography picture of The Stata or aka Building 32.

Behind the Photo of a Slender Spreadwing Damselfly

www.rothgalleries.com

Last weekend we spent in Maine with family. Sunday morning I had a chance to explore the family garden which was packed with little critters. While photographing insects a Slender Spreadwing damselfly landed on a nearby flower. It is quite amazing how gracious damselflies look when they hang on to a floral. In seconds with tripod and camera in place I switched from landscape to vertical format, manually focused on the the damselfly head and snagged a few pictures. The magnifying feature on my camera allowed me to pin point focus. The camera self timer combined with a tripod minimized camera shake and ensured best image quality.

During post processing I removed dust sports, minimally adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final images of "Damselfly".
